Pahalgam is situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from the Lidder River and Sheshnag Lake. Pahalgam is the famous hill resort in Kashmir valley and cool even during the summer. This hill resort is set between fairly steep hills. Its natural splendor is described by snow clad mountain peaks on all sides, a white water river that traverses the bottoms of the narrow valley, and the wonderful weather. Traveling through meandering roads of north Kashmir, Pahalgam opens up with a fresh cool breeze of the river. It has an astounding 9 hole gold course open for tourists now being extended into an 18 hole . The golf championships are organized by state government and private hoteliers in Summer. Here, tourists and locals putt together in the shades of Pine trees surrounding the golf course.
Trout fishing in Lidder River is quite popular sport in Pahalgam. Permits have to be collected well in advance from J & K fisheries department. Best season for fishing is April to September.
Sightseeing & treks
Baisaran (5 km) is an exciting place where a stream flows through the meadows and pine trees. Shikargha a wild life reserve is another nearby picnic spot reached on foot or by pony. The Betab valley at a walk able distance is a tourists spot famous for many film shootings. Phrislan at a short trek is an ideal place for troth fishing.
Mattan temple :
few kilometers ahead of Anantnag, a pond full of holy fishes is renowned locally as creations of Lord Shiva.
Ashmuqam (80) km A famous shrine of Ziana Shah Sahib RH fall enrooted to Pahalgam.
Mamal Temple :
The ancient temple of Mamalika built in 11th century by King Jayasiknba is situated on the right bank of the Lidder. The temple ahs a pedestal and a Shivalinga.
Aru :
is a resort village 11 km from Pahalgam with a motor able road, From here a famous trek via Lidderwat leads to the Kolohai Glaciers at an altitude fo 34 oo mtrs. Here you can have a glimpse of Kolohoi Peak, 5370 mtrs. Another trek from Lidderwat leads to the most desired twin Lakes, Tarsar 3794 mtrs & Marsar 3788 mtrs. Tulian Lake at an altitude of 3353 mtrs is a full day trek via Baisaran. The steep terrains lead to a magically crystal clear lake where one would love to stay for a longer time.
Amarnath Ji Yatra
Pahalgam is Base Camp of Amarnathji yatra which stands at 3952 mtrs, 46.7 km from Pahalgam. The Holy Cave is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. The ice lingam formed by water droplets, symblises Lord Shiva . People visit the Holy Cave during the scheduled Yatra period. Yatris can hire a pony of Dandy from Pahalgam.
Distances of stopovers from Pahalgam are : Chandanwari 16 km Pissu top 19.6 km Sheeshnag 25.6 km, Holy Cave 46 . 7 km.
All stopovers have facilities from tents to medical comps and langars, The trek is covered in 2 to 3 days. This Hindu pilgrimage is believed to be the discovery of a Muslim shepherd nomad Butta Malik who’s descendant still receive a percentage of the donations made by pilgrims. The Yatra Generally during June to August depending upon the Hindu calendar (Sawan Purnima)
